"Stop" watches are watches that allow the counter hand to be reset to zero. Compared to a chronograph, however, there is always one function missing: either the hand cannot be held at zero, in which case we call it a "stop-en vol" watch, or once the hand has been started and then stopped, it cannot be held in position without pressing the push button, in which case we refer to it as a "chrono-stop" watch.
